Walvis Bay Town Council tables N$566m budget

The Walvis Bay municipality tabled a N$566-million budget for the next financial year at a town council meeting on Thursday.
The budget, recording expected revenue of about N$566 million for the new financial year and expenditure also projected to amount to N$566 million, was announced by management committee chairperson Richard Hoaeb.
Hoaeb also announced proposed tariff increases for the next financial year.
“Considering the average annual inflation, which is 5%, and also considering the anticipated increase in service provider tariffs, the utility services tariff increase has been proposed as 5% for water and 2,5% on sewerage, refuse, rates and taxes,” he said.
Hoaeb noted that capital projects to the value of N$887 million will be executed over a period of more than one year.
The total amount on the capital budget that is anticipated to be spent during the ensuing financial year amounts to N$461 million, while the remaining N$426 million will be used during the year ending June 2025 and beyond.
Hoaeb provided a breakdown of projects included in spending for the year ending June 2024, which includes N$173 million for land development projects.
An amount of N$42 million will be used for service delivery-related projects and N$104 million for infrastructure repair and replacement.
An amount of N$35 million is allocated to social projects, while N$91,5 million will be spent on vehicle replacements and additions.
Hoaeb noted that the town council has evaluated priorities, with one of the most significant areas requiring attention being infrastructure repairs and replacements.
He said pothole repairs and maintenance, as well as the resealing and refurbishment of streets, need attention.
