Three-month notice for marriage is reasonable – Masua

Written by on July 11, 2024

Swapo lawmaker Patience Masua believes the three-month notice period to get married ensures that all legal and administrative procedures are completed in a timely manner.

This notice period is stipulated in the new marriage bill up for debate in the parliament.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security has to conduct research on the validity of the marriage. This period allows sufficient time for any necessary background checks and verifications to take place, ensuring the integrity of the marriage process,” Masua told The Namibian on Thursday.

She said that while some argue that a shorter or longer period could be considered, she thinks otherwise.

“I think the three-month window is a reasonable compromise that supports both administrative efficiency and the couple’s need for preparation,” Masua said.
