SA approaches ICJ yet again to stop onslaught on Rafah
Written by on May 16, 2024
South Africa on Thursday told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that Israel’s plan to wipe Palestine off the face of the earth is about to be realised with its invasion of Rafah.
South Africa is seeking modified provisional measures against Israel, an emergency halt to the Rafah offensive, and the protection of Palestinians against genocide, arguing that the previous orders by the ICJ have not been successful.
More than 25 000 civilians have so far lost their lives.
An estimated 1,5 million Palestinians are said to have been left with Rafah as their only last hope of refuge.
“No homes, no running water or electricity, no sewage. If the court does not act now, the possibility of rebuilding a viable Palestine in Gaza will be destroyed.
“The details are not easy to verify, because Israel continues to bar investigators and journalists from entering Gaza.
“Nothing, not self-defence can ever justify genocide. The court ruled in 2004 that there is no right to self-defence by an occupier against a state it occupies.
“Israel’s plan to wipe out Gaza is about to be realised,” the legal counsel said.
