Tobie Aupindi discusses the increasing amount of potholes around the city

April 9, 2025

[PODCAST]

If you’ve driven through Windhoek lately, chances are you’ve had to dodge more than just traffic — the pothole problem is becoming a national punchline, or as one MP described them, ponds.

Swapo party member of parliament, Tobie Aupindi, recently voiced his dismay in parliament, saying he’s appalled by how the City of Windhoek is handling the pothole crisis. And while city officials say rain is hampering progress, some residents — including 16-year-old Ines van Wyk from Havana — have taken matters into their own hands, using gravel and buckets to earn just enough for bread by patching up the roads themselves.

We spoke to Aupindi to unpack his concerns and ask: What can be done right now — before these potholes swallow another wheel or a future?
