Marko Ndolvu on the appointment of Kirsty Coventry as president of the International Olympic Committee
April 4, 2025
Zimbabwean Olympic legend Kirsty Coventry made global headlines after becoming the first woman and first African to be elected president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) — marking what she described as an “extraordinary moment”.
At just 41 years old, the two-time Olympic swimming champion is not only breaking gender and continental barriers, but also becoming the youngest ever person to hold what is widely regarded as the most powerful role in global sports governance.
Her visit to the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture was seen as a highly significant moment for Namibia’s sporting future, especially in light of recent discussions around Olympic development, youth empowerment, and the role of Africa on the international sports stage.
So, what does this visit mean for Namibia? And what can we expect from the new leadership at the IOC?
To unpack this and more, we were joined on air by sports analyst Marko Ndlovu.
