Celebrating World Radio Day: A Look Back at the Impact of Radio with Jossy Joss
February 13, 2025
On February 13th, the world came together to celebrate World Radio Day—a tribute to one of the most powerful and enduring mediums of communication. For decades, radio played a vital role in informing, entertaining, and connecting communities across the globe.
Radio made its way to Africa in the early 1920s, with the first recorded broadcast in South Africa in 1923. However, in its early days, broadcasts were primarily tailored for European settlers rather than the local African population. Over time, radio evolved into a voice for the people, shaping narratives, amplifying diverse voices, and becoming an essential tool for storytelling and cultural expression.
As we celebrated World Radio Day, we reflected on the legends who made radio iconic and explored what life after the microphone looked like. Joining us was veteran broadcast specialist and radio personality, Joseph Jossy Joss, who shared his journey and insights.
