Parents urged to invest in children’s education

Former Ohangwena governor Usko Nghaamwa has urged parents to seriously invest in their children’s education.
Nghaamwa was speaking during the Oshikunde Combined School National Senior Secondary Certificate Ordinary (NSSCO) Level result event on Friday.
The school was one of the top five best performing schools in NSSCO in the region last year.
Nghaamwa, who is the patron of the school, hosted the celebratory event featuring various speakers who have endured hardship but persevered to find success. This was as a means to encourage and motivate pupils, many of whom come from poor backgrounds, to remain committed to their studies and maintain discipline despite their circumstances.
“I know a lot the parents here have cattle and goats but they should sometimes sell off some of their stock in order to pay for the education of their children. We need to meet government halfway and seriously invest in the education of our children.”
Nghaamwa advised pupils to choose fields of study that can add tangible value to their community and the country’s development. According to Nghaamwa, it is a tradition in the region for some parents to choose fields of study for their children, such as teaching or nursing.
“Which is not bad but now the world is evolving and we have to move with the times. We need scientists and engineers. We need innovators, and remember you cannot fight poverty if you are not disciplined and you don’t take school seriously,” he urged.
“Don’t also just study to be employed by government. The government cannot employ all the people.”
Speaking at the same occasion, governor of the Ohangwena region Sebastian Ndeitunga advised pupils to dedicate their time and energy to their studies in order to achieve success.
“I am delighted to see that the school is living up to its mission and aim for its existence. I, therefore, congratulate the teachers, learners and staff for making the region and Namibia proud,” said Ndeitunga.
Regional Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu) representative George Hafilwa commended the school’s leadership.
“Nantu is proud of this school. Like some other schools in the region, I can testify that this school has been faced with difficulties but with hard work and the principal’s dedication and leadership quality, this school is performing well,” said Hafilwa.
