NHE hands over 119 houses at Swakopmund

Written by on June 17, 2024

The minister of urban and rural development, Erastus Uutoni, through the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) handed over 119 houses at Swakopmund to new owners on Monday.

The houses are part of 505 housing units that have been standing uncompleted in the town’s Matutura Extension 9 area for years due to a legal dispute between the main building contractor and subcontractors.

Uutoni said the completion of the houses is due to the hard work and teamwork of the new appointed contractor, New Era Investments, and the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development.

“The 119 houses whose handing-over we are witnessing today are the last batch of the 319 houses that were handed over to New Era Investments for completion,” Uutoni said.

He added that he and his ministry are aware that there is a need for more decent and affordable housing for all people.

Uutoni said the Cabinet last year in November approved a revised national housing policy with a five-year implementation action plan.

The policy gives special attention to the improvement of conditions in informal settlements and the needs of identified target groups, notably the ultra-low, low and middle income groups.

“We are doing everything possible to have the remaining 572 commenced but uncompleted houses also completed as a matter of priority. These consist of 186 houses here at Swakopmund, 362 units at Otjomuise Extension 10 in Windhoek and 24 units at Opuwo,” Uutoni said.

NHE board of directors deputy chairperson Hasting Tjipueja said the housing parastatal has become synonymous with house handovers, with houses handed over to 65 families in April.

“Our renewed approach at NHE is to maintain this momentum in terms of housing delivery to ensure that our projected housing targets are met without hindrances,” Tjipueja said.

A total of 4 446 housing units have been handed over under the mass housing development programme to date.
