NEFF threatens to approach Electoral Court over deregistration

The Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) has demanded that the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) withdraw their deregistration or risk legal action.
The ECN on Monday evening confirmed that the NEFF and the Christian Democratic Voice (CDV) are no longer registered as political parties due to their failure to submit financial statements.
“It is our instructions to bring to your attention that your decision is flawed on the basis of being irrational and unreasonable,” the NEFF’s lawyer, Kadhila Amoomo, wrote to the ECN on Tuesday.
He demanded that ECN head Peter Shaama adhere to the deadline of 30 June given the party for the submission of financial statements.
“It is therefore clear that the commission is bound by the deadline of 30 June . . . It is against this background that we are instructed to demand . . . that you provide us with an undertaking that the decision will not be implemented pending its review in the Electoral Court of Namibia,” Amoomo wrote.
In a letter sent to Longinus Iipumbu on 24 April, Shaama told the NEFF deputy leader to submit the party’s statements and proof of publication in local newspapers by 30 June.
