Namibia sees first green hydrogen fuel trucks

In a groundbreaking development for Namibia’s energy landscape, for the first time two dual-fuel trucks were fuelled with locally produced hydrogen at the N$3,5 billion Cleanergy Solutions Namibia facility at Walvis Bay on Thursday.
This marks a significant stride towards establishing Namibia as a key player in the production and export of green hydrogen and ammonia for industrial applications, from mining to shipping, trucks and trains, powered by clean energy.
The momentous occasion was witnessed by Namibian president Nangolo Mbumba and Belgium’s King Philippe, underscoring the international significance of the event.
President Mbumba hailed the milestone as a realisation of a long-held vision, emphasising the transition from aspiration to tangible achievement.
Cleanergy Solutions Namibia, a joint venture between Namibia’s Ohlthaver and List Group and Belgium’s CMB.TECH, spearheaded the initiative.
The state-of-the-art facility not only produces hydrogen using solar panels but also features a refuelling station and a hydrogen academy.
The project, which began three years ago with late president Hage Geingob’s vision for a green hydrogen-powered industry, is now coming to fruition.
According to Namibia’s green hydrogen commissioner James Mnyupe, as Namibia embraces clean energy, supported by strategic partnerships and government initiatives, the nation is poised for economic diversification and job creation, aligning with the aspirations laid out in Vision 2030.
“Today’s milestone signifies not only a technological achievement but also a step towards realising the dreams of past leaders and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come,” he said.
