Mukwe and Ndiyona constituencies cautioned about lions

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has cautioned residents of Mukwe and Ndiyona constituencies in the Kavango East region about the presence of three lions which are roaming around in these areas.
The environment ministry’s spokesperson Romeo Muyunda in a press release on Thursday said that the lions were first spotted in Mayara, Katenture and Shamangorwa villages on Monday.
He, however, added that upon tracing the lions this morning, their staff spotted tracks at Mbwata village, which indicate that the three lions have since split up as only tracks of two lions can be seen.
“The tracks at Mbwata village indicate that it’s a male and female lion. The lions that are believed to be coming from Bwabwata National Park have since killed a calf at Tjova village and a goat at Katenture village. People with livestock are urged to keep them in the kraals at night,” he said.
He added that they believe that the lions are on their way to Khaudum National Park, saying that residents around this park should also be on high alert.
“If the lions are passing by and do not pose a threat to you and your property then avoid provoking it or taking the law into your own hands. We will continue to monitor their movements and provide regular updates,” he said.
Mutunda appealed to the communities to report any sightings of the lions to officials who are on the ground or call chief warden Selma Angolo at 081 1431988.
