Mbumba urges youth to register to vote

Written by on June 3, 2024

President Nangolo Mbumba has urged young people to register to vote in this year’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

The president himself registered to vote at Olympia on Monday.

“That is your licence to exercise your right as a citizen of Namibia to vote and elect either an organisation, party or individual to represent you in the management of your region or the whole country,“ he said.

Mbumba said the Electoral Commission for Namibia (ECN) only takes 15 minutes per person to ensure voters are Namibian citizens.

All Namibians of voting age are encouraged to register to participate in November’s elections.

The chairperson of the ECN, Elsie Nghikembua, on Monday said Windhoek has so far seen a slow turnout of potential young voters.

She urged the youth to register before 1 August.

“We do not have the scope to extend the registration process. We only have this 52 days. If we extend the date we would need to change the registration dates, and we do not have room for that,” she said.
