High public demand to split region – Ohangwena chair
Written by on June 7, 2024
The chairperson of the Ohangwena Regional Council, Erickson Ndawanifa, says there is a high demand from the region’s residents to split it in two.
He says community members are calling for two regions, namely the Ohangwena region and the Onalumono region.
Others suggest names such as the Ohangwena East and Ohangwena West regions.
“Of course the regional leadership has to look into the public’s proposal, and there is a high public demand calling for the region to be divided into two regions.
“We have convened a meeting with the constituency councillors to go back to their respective communities and hear from the public what their sole proposal is to allow us to give our collective input to the delimitation committee. We cannot speak on their behalf, they have to decide for themselves,” Ndawanifa says.
He says some residents are also calling for one of the two regions to be named the Okongo region.
Ohangwena governor Sebastian Ndeitunga says consultations are ongoing and constituency councillors are still consulting with community members.
“As they say, the majority rules. We will go for what the majority is demanding and forward proposals to the delimitation committee for further deliberations.
“People are demanding for the region to be split in two for better access to services and service delivery,” he says.
