GIZ-ProTVET project strengthens technical education system

Written by on June 30, 2024

The GIZ-funded Promotion of Technical Vocational Education and Training (ProTVET) project aims to improve Namibia’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system.

ProTVET project programme manager Jerry Beukes outlined the goals of the project, a collaborative effort between the German federal ministry for economic cooperation and development, the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology and Innovation and the Namibia Training Authority (NTA), at the KAYEC Graduation Ceremony in Windhoek yesterday.

He said the project supports the development of Namibia’s TVET system through improved regulatory frameworks and efficient governance practices.

“ProTVET works to ensure TVET programmes align with the current and future needs of Namibia’s labor market, ensuring graduates have the skills and qualifications employers seek,” he said.

Beukes said the focus is on growing Namibia’s TVET system’s capacity to deliver high-quality training to a larger number of students.

“A well-functioning TVET system is crucial for Namibia’s economic development. By equipping Namibians with the skills and knowledge they need to secure good jobs in various industries, the ProTVET project is playing a significant role in Namibia’s future prosperity,” Beukes said.

He said the main focus of the project is people with disabilities, as the project aims to identify and remove barriers that prevent them from participating in TVET programmes.

“A working group was formed in 2022 to investigate these barriers and make recommendations. The working group included representatives from the ministry, NTA and GIZ-ProTVET, as well as 40 organisations from Namibia’s disabled community,” Beukes said.

“The focus is also on the institutions’ ability to deliver high-quality training.

This includes providing training for instructors and administrators and developing new curricula,” Beukes said.

He said the pilot project was a great success and it provided NTA with more opportunities for valuable insights for future considerations pertaining to the inclusion of people with disabilities in TVET in 2025 and beyond.
