Election season empties National Assembly

The National Assembly failed to meet a quorum on Thursday amid election season.
Speaker Peter Katjavivi suspended the day’s session, since fewer than 37 members showed up to reach a quorum.
Over the last three days, more and more members of parliament have been absent as political party leaders are campaigning countrywide.
The National Assembly resumed on Tuesday after a six-week recess. The parliament’s siren yesterday went off three times to call members, yet only a handful took their seats.
The National Assembly was set to discuss the divorce bill, which sets out to make the process cheaper and shorter.
This is in addition to the discussion on reports tabled and the motion on the underutilisation of Namibia’s perennial rivers.
Among those present on Thursday was defence minister Frans Kapofi, Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) parliamentarians Max Katjimune and Winnie Moongo, Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters’ Kalimbo Iipumbu, and lawmaker Dudu Murorua.
Katjimune told The Namibian on Thursday that PDM members were making their way to Opuwo as they would have a rally over the weekend.
