ECN not extending registration deadline
Written by on July 8, 2024
The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Thursday reported that it has registered 676 390 eligible voters, countrywide and abroad.
The ECN has recorded 23 515 registered voters per day between 3 and 29 June.
However, ECN chief electoral officer Peter Shaama says the commission is concerned about the decline of voter turnout during the last weeks of June.
“While acknowledging with appreciation all eligible Namibian citizens who have registered as voters since the first day of registration of voters to date, the commission noted with great concern a considerable decline in the turnout during the week of 24 to 29 June,” he says.
Khomas region is leading with the highest voter count of 13 0595 registered voters while Kunene has registered 2 3513 voters.
Shaama says the registration deadline will not be extended and urged all eligible Namibian voters who have not registered to register.
“The commission is urging all eligible Namibian voters who have not registered to register as no further extension will be implemented,” he says.
The general voter registration for the November National Assembly and presidential elections will end on 1 August.
