The children’s parliament swore in its new speaker and deputy speaker in the National Assembly on Friday.

Parliamentary spokesperson Sacky Kadhikwa on Friday said the speakers have expressed their gratitude and commitment to serving Namibia’s youth.

The newly elected speaker and deputy speaker are Jane Phiri from the Hardap region, and Michael Ajiboso from the Kavango East region.

According to a statement released by the parliament, Phiri said she was deeply honoured to accept the role of deputy speaker of the sixth session of the children’s parliament, embracing the responsibility bestowed on her by her peers.

She vowed to ensure that every child’s voice is heard and that issues affecting all children in Namibia are addressed.

“I call on all of you, my fellow child parliamentarians, to effectively use this platform that
has been created for us to be fully engaged wherever you are, and to be advocates for the rights
of all children in Namibia,” Phiri said.

Speaking on his appointment as deputy speaker, Ajiboso said the “work has just begun, and for us to succeed, we need a commitment from all of us representing the 14 regions of our country”.
