Kavango East youth summit all about innovation

More than 80 young people from the Kavango East region and beyond gathered at the University of Namibia’s Rundu campus on Saturday to attend the Influential Youth Engagement Summit.
The summit was hosted under the theme ‘Igniting the Future: Fostering Innovation and Leadership among Youth’.
It aimed to bring together young people from diverse backgrounds to address critical issues affecting the Kavango East region.
Spearheaded and founded by Lloyd Sikeba, the summit serves as a platform for civic education, empowerment, inspiration, education, entrepreneurship and the resolution of societal challenges impacting young people.
“Since its inception in 2017, the summit has evolved into a significant annual event, fostering resilience, development and growth among the region’s youth,” Sikeba says.
This year’s edition brought together a diverse group of young people, community leaders and experts from various fields.
“We engaged in discussions, innovative ideas and actionable solutions that addressed the challenges faced by the youth in the region,” Sikeba says.
Activities hosted at the summit included inspirational talks, interactive sessions addressing critical topics, such as youth unemployment, public health and gender-based violence, as well as a workshop on entrepreneurship and mental well-being.
Sikeba says last year’s event saw about 115 young people attending.
“It was amazing and we anticipate that the numbers would increase in the future,” he says, adding he carried the cost of the summit himself, with the help of some friends.
