Written by on July 3, 2024

The Office of the Judiciary has expressed its sorrow on the death of former Zambian chief justice Annel Silungwe.

Silungwe died at the age of 88 on Sunday.

The Office of the Judiciary noted in a statement on Tuesday that Silungwe contributed greatly to the legal community in Namibia, serving as a judge of the High Court of Namibia from 1999 until 2009.

He also served as an acting judge of the High Court and the Supreme Court of Namibia in 1995 and 1996. Silungwe was the first director of the Justice Training Centre (JTC) from 1995 to 1999.

Under his leadership, the JTC gave comprehensive training to law graduates to ensure their successful admission in the legal profession, the judiciary stated.

He also served as the founding chairperson of the Magistrates Commission, to which he was appointed in June 2003.
