Young man charged with robbing NWR boss

Written by on July 3, 2024

A 20-year-old man has appeared in court in connection with an alleged armed robbery in which Namibia Wildlife Resorts managing director Matthias Ngwangwama was attacked and injured in Windhoek two weeks ago.

Didimalang Modisa is being held in custody after appearing in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on a charge of robbery with aggravating circumstances on Monday.

Modisa was arrested on Friday last week.

The state is alleging that he robbed Ngwangwama in the Auasblick area of Windhoek on 19 June.

A police spokesperson reported after the incident that Ngwangwama was exercising in the Auasblick area between 18h00 and 19h00 on 19 June when he was approached by two unknown men who were armed with knives.

The men allegedly robbed Ngwangwama, taking his cellphone and car keys from him and leaving him tied up at the scene.
Ngwangwama was injured when he was stabbed, the police reported.

The alleged robbers left the scene with Ngwangwama’s vehicle, which was later recovered by the police.

Public prosecutor Rowan van Wyk informed magistrate Mutafela Likando during Modisa’s court appearance yesterday that he will also be charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

Additional suspects are still to be arrested, Van Wyk added.

Van Wyk said Modisa is also facing a similar charge, dating from April this year, which was registered at Wanaheda Police Station, and that the state objects to bail being granted to him at this stage.

Likando informed Modisa of his right to apply for bail and ordered that he should be held in custody in the meantime.
His next court appearance is scheduled to take place on 3 September.
