Anti-gay movement calls for justice minister’s removal

Written by on June 24, 2024

An anti-gay movement has called for the removal of minister of justice Yvonne Dausab, or the minister’s voluntarily resignation.

Stop Homosexuality and Same-Sex Marriage in Namibia (Hossamina) is planning a mass demonstration on 12 August.

This was confirmed by Hossamina committee chairperson Pendapala Nakathingo in a press statement released on 12 June.

Nakathingo says the appointment of Dausab is against the rights of those against same-sex marriage.

“We are not comfortable with a person who is promoting that which is against us as a nation,” he says.

Nakathingo says “we are not against her as a person”, but says they do not approve of her appointment as the minister of justice.

He says her appointment is an injustice to biological men and women who identify as such.

“Failure to meet our demands as natural men and women . . . we shall demand a referendum,” the statement reads.

The committee is also demanding that the president sign the bills on marriage and spouses within 48 hours.

Nakathingo says the legalisation of same-sex marriage would negatively influence children’s minds.

“We are not against them, but we are against their activities . . . “

Efforts to reach Dausab were unsuccessful.

A group of people protesting against the Supreme Court ruling on the recognition of foreign same-sex marriages concluded in other countries called on president Hage Geingob to relieve Dausab of her duties last year.
