Vulnerable community members at Walvis Bay receive food

Erongo Marine Enterprise employees at Walvis Bay this week participated in a company-wide staff-volunteering project where they prepared meal packets.
The company partnered with Rise Against Hunger Africa to provide 1 762 meal packets consisting of soya, rice, dried vegetable mix and vitamins, specifically formulated to combat malnutrition, with each packet designed to feed about 6 people.
Rise Against Hunger Africa is a global organisation that coordinates the distribution of food and life-saving aid worldwide through fun and engaging meal-packing events, giving both corporate employees and volunteers an opportunity to make a lasting impact in less than an hour.
The event was coordinated by Oceana Group as part of its group-wide staff ‘volunteering with purpose’ programme in celebration of Mandela Month, which is celebrated annually in July.
“Oceana this year aims to pack 300 000 meals across the group. It is the first year that Namibia participated. About 72 volunteers packed for 80 minutes and prepared 10 572 meal portions, which translates to 1 762 meal packets.
The packets and canned pilchards will be distributed to community feeding centres in the greater Uis region and a feeding centre in Walvis Bay,” says company representative Francois van der Merwe.
Other suppliers and stakeholders were also invited to participate in the event, with one of Erongo Marine Enterprises’ suppliers, Coastal Engineering Services, donating canned fish to the value of N$5 000.
In 2023, 227 Oceana employees in South Africa and the United States packed 90 000 meals, which aimed to feed 350 children for a year.
The initiative not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also promotes long-term community well-being and global development.
