SADC celebrates day combating desertfication

SADC parliamentary forum secretary general Boemo Sekgoma emphasised the critical need for unified efforts in tackling land degradation across the region.
Sekgoma said this on World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought on Monday morning.
The day is celebrated annually on 17 June, with this year’s theme being ‘United for Land: Our Legacy’.
“Our region is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of land degradation, which threatens food security, water availability and the livelihoods of millions of our citizens,” Sekgoma said.
According to Sekgoma, incidences and the intensities of droughts in the region is expected to increase in the coming years.
She emphasised the role of parliaments in enforcing laws that promote sustainable land management and hold governments accountable for implementing effective policies.
Sekgoma urged partnerships across sectors to develop comprehensive strategies addressing the root causes of desertification.
She highlighted the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, reforestation, afforestation and water conservation efforts in mitigating land degradation.
The secretary general called for increased education and awareness to empower communities in combating desertification and drought.
She encouraged renewed commitment from member parliaments and partners to secure a sustainable and resilient future for the SADC region.
