Mbumba congratulates SA on successful elections

Written by on June 3, 2024

President Nangolo Mbumba has congratulated South Africa for conducting peaceful, free and fair elections.

Mbumba committed to work with the next government of South Africa, to build stronger bilateral relations for development and mutual benefit of the two nations.

“As a neighbouring and sister country, Namibia takes pride in the manner in which the people of South Africa conducted an exemplary election, which reinforced peace and stability as a precondition for development in the sister Republic of South Africa,” Mbumba said in a statement issued on Monday.

On 29 May, millions of South Africans went to the polls, with the final results announced on Sunday.

South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) lost its 30-year parliamentary majority when the party received only 40,22% of the vote, down from the 57,5% in the 2019 parliamentary vote. This means that the ANC will now have to form a coalition government with the opposition.

The ANC now has 159 seats in the National Assembly, followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) at 21,81% (87 seats), uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) at 14,59% (58 seats) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at 9,52% with 39 seats.
