Omo Kakujaha-Matundu unpacks potential of local production
April 15, 2025
In just the last quarter of 2024, Namibia imported more than N$35 million worth of apples, making apples the most imported horticultural product in the country. That’s 35% of our total apple needs, mostly coming from South Africa and Europe.
Meanwhile, local production? Still stuck in seedling mode.
Despite various efforts by government and farmers, we remain deeply reliant on foreign fruit, even as the Namibia Agronomic Board is calling for serious investment in local apple farming. So the big question is: Are we missing an economic opportunity hiding in plain sight? Or is the idea of growing apples at scale here just not feasible?
Joining us to crunch the numbers and unpack the potential was economist Omo Kakujaha-Matundu, a regular voice on national development matters.
