United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for the establishment of a reparations mechanism to address the historical injustices suffered by Africa due to colonialism and the transatlantic slave trade. Much closer to home, we examine the contentious issue of genocide reparations for the Nama and Ovaherero communities. Recent amendments to the joint declaration with Germany have removed the cap on reparations, yet critics insist that these measures fall short of delivering tangible justice.
