The Ministry of Health and Social Services is running a campaign for free eye surgeries that kicked off on Saturday at the Rundu Intermediate Hospital.
More than 500 people have been screened so far.
The campaign targets patients from three regions: the Kavango West, Zambezi and Kavango East regions.
The campaign happens annually from May to June.
The campaign started with patients from Rundu, the Zambezi region, the Kavango West and will conclude in the Nyangana and Andara district hospitals.
Ophthalmic clinical officer at Rundu state hospital Alfeus Shipanga says the elderly or pensioners who have problems with their eyesight should make bookings from January to March every year.
“The turn up of patients is very good since every district arranged transport for the patients to and from Rundu state hospital,” Shipanga says.
He says some people could not make it because they missed the information due to not having radios and a lack of network coverage.
Those who did not make it for surgery during this campaign will only be attended to next year, during the same period.
