Nekundi accuses Katjavivi of tribalism in National Assembly

Written by on June 12, 2024

Works and transport deputy minister Veikko Nekundi has accused National Assembly speaker Peter Katjavivi of being tribalist in his rulings.

This was as members of the National Assembly discussed the divorce bill, which was tabled by justice minister Yvonne Dausab on Tuesday.

Katjavivi told Nekundi to sit, citing that he was repetitive while other members had different contributions to the debate on the bill.

The deputy minister did not take kindly to this and said Katjavivi, who is Ovaherero, was allowing his community members to speak while he, an Aawambo, must take his seat and listen.

“It is tribalism and favouritism. Yes, it is tribalism. Because a [Omu]Herero is speaking, now the [Aa]Wambos must not,” Nekundi said.

When opposition party parliamentarians called on the speaker to intervene, Katjavivi said, “I did not hear that”.
